Community Roots

Within the healthcare sector, focused on adolescent behavioral healthcare, I developed an In patient facility. Research and concept driven by the redirection of stigma within the mental health sphere. Creating tangible spaces that reimagine facilities to target and support those facing mental distress whilst ensuring both safety and comfort at the forefront of the design.

Centered around patients' choice, there is an urgency to redirect stigma within the sphere and comfort of inpatient facilities. Limiting ostracization is achieved through attenuation of negative stimuli, incuring sensory design that creates positive redirection from patients' fixed setting; varied furniture choices, cyrcadian rythym lighting, sense of place all within the patients' control. Supplemented by acoustical treatment , soft-to-touch elements & sensory led wayfinding techniques. Color theory is put into place in differing interactions of the space ranging from quiet zones for patiens to group activity room. This delineation is teamed with tactile areas of refuge and prospect to give patients an illusion of agency while still ensuring staff safety.

Design Intention

Within the intersection of safety and choice, how can redirection mask the sterility of a in patient environments

Supportive design implementation

Accommodation for all possible users including design options for stimming, harm reduction (for self or others), stress relieving elements through grounding tools as a tools (I.E) soft to touch, natural materials, both sturdy and approachable.

Investigative answer: Community Outreach

Adressing stigma early establishes a culture mirrored through education and design to support those targeted

Design Intention

Creating spaces that are easy to navigate in-sighting an atmosphere of curiosity as one travels deeper within the space. Ensured with safety in mind as all furniture pieces are weighted down, ceiling features at a minimum of 8 feet, and all surfaces are tamper proof.

Prospect & Refuge implementation

Ensuring patient comfort is key in limiting harm to others and themselves, as prevention of fear or discomfort is achieved through features of places to “disappear” take refuge while also look out onto the space.

Investigative answer: Wayfinding

Creating clear and distinct ways to navigate the space diminishes the reality of space unfamiliar to the user.

Design Intention

In order to begin process of renewal from mental distress, there is an intrinsic need to satisfy social belonging, creating community but no before physiological needs & safety needs are met. As the most trafficked area within the facility, clarity of intent is a must, within design and comfort.

Sensory Design implementation

Sensory is keyed at the forefront of the community room with interactive furniture which can change as needs vary, Group therapy, individual time, arts and crafts, whilst still durable and soft to the touch.

Biophilia implementation

Access to nature both physically or visually are implemented throughout the space, tying into safety, Larger tree elements are placed out of reach for patients to tamper with, including circadian day lighting that follows the natural progression of the day

Investigative answer: Sensory Stimulus

Creating a hearth gives users a place to feel comfort within a new environment, allowing self expression to blossom.
